Horizon vs. Premium Themes
Premium Themes ($350-400)
Premium themes like Impulse, Prestige or Symmetry cost between $350 and $400 one-time. In return, you get years of proven code, 95%+ positive reviews and direct support from the theme developer. These themes have long since outgrown their teething troubles and work reliably.
Dawn (free)
The free Dawn remains available and is supported by Shopify with bug fixes. It's more mature than Horizon but no longer receives new features. For beginners who prioritize stability over new architecture, Dawn may be the better choice.
When to Switch
Horizon is a good starting point for trying out e-commerce. Once your shop shows traction and you know you're in it for the long term, it's worth looking at premium themes. The switch requires effort because customizations don't transfer, but a stable theme foundation pays off over the years.
For existing Dawn users with a working setup, there's no urgent reason to switch. Horizon offers more flexibility but also more risk. Wait until the biggest bugs are fixed, or use a planned relaunch as an opportunity.
Conclusion: Horizon 2026
Horizon is a good entry point for merchants who want to test e-commerce first. The free availability makes it a risk-free option for MVPs and first attempts. For professional shops with stable revenue, however, the $300-400 for a premium theme is a better investment.
The 46% positive reviews show that Horizon is not yet at the level of established themes. Those planning long-term should invest directly in a premium theme or at least wait until Shopify has fixed the biggest bugs.
